It's been a long time coming.....dreadlocks. I always wanted them for as long as I can remember. Like wanted them when I was 12 years old. People say you need a reason to want them, well that's partially true. I say that you need to want them for a long time, think about it often and don't make a snap decision. Almost like a tattoo, it's permanent; a commitment; you can cut them out of course, but who wants a buzz cut?
The method I used to create my dreads was a combination of several methods. I back combed, twist and ripped and did a bit of weaving as well. I chose to keep my dreads on the smaller side, actually following the natural separation of my hair. I do maintenance on them every few days, palm rolling, tightening at the roots and using a crochet hook tucking in stray hairs. Honestly, I knew how I wanted them to look, how I was going to wear them and have thought about it many times over.
They are still baby dreadies and won't be fully mature for at least a year I am told. So for now I see fly aways and bandanas for awhile.
Why do I want them? Let me tell you.....
My hair. I never have been really happy with my hair all my 33 years. It gets in your face when you are trying to enjoy the wind while Jeeping with the top down. Hair gets sucked out your open car window and then trapped when you close it - ouch! Your husband rolls over on your hair while sleeping and you get a rude awakening when you try to roll over in bed. I love brushing my hair, said nobody EVER. It gets tangled and knotty everyday. I need an industrial comb and lots of de-tangler to untangle it again. Hot and humid days makes naturally wavy hair poofy and frizzy. Enough said.
Dreadlocks are beautiful and different. I have always been different. Dreadlocks can be decorated too. I am excited about some glass beads I ordered from Genschi and her other shop Journeybeads on Etsy. I can't wait to do some hemp wraps in my dreads as well. There are so many beautiful ways to wear them, up, down, braided and most styles do not require a hairband.
I have to thank Mariah for starting my dreads and giving me some great tips on care and maintenance. I also have to thank YouTube videos for some other info as well. Like anything, I recommend researching before you do it, buy it or use it.
